Winter West German Pottery

We like to rotate our West German pottery collection dependent on the season or special events. We currently have a ‘winter’ display of Carsten’s and  glass items out on our sideboard and in another corner a white collection of ES Keramik, KPM and Jasba vases.

Seeing Double (5) – Jasba and Jopeko – Cortina Decor

Jasba are well known for the Cortina decor. Usually found in black and white but also occasionally with different base glazes (for exaple yellow and green – see here). Apparently this decor was introduced by Jasba in 1956 and takes its name from the winter olympic games at Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy which took place in the same year. The white and black perhaps representing the snow on the Dolomite Alps. Items in this range are often found with Jopeko “Form and Farbe” labels.

Jasba 117-20 - Cortina Black

Jopeko however also produced a glaze decor so similar that when items are placed side by side it is not possible to discern from which company the item originated – except for the addition of three bright spots. The three spots (always yellow, red and blue but not necesserily in the same order) were apparently added by Jopeko to sufficiently differentiate thier items from those made by Jasba and so circumnavigate the copyright regulations of the time. An advertisment from the time released by Jopeko shows a vase in this decor but without the three spots, presumably it had been carefully aligned so that they were just out of view.

The two factories are located just a few hundred meters apart in the small German town of Ransbach-Baumbach.

This post forms part of a series of blogs, Seeing Double, which looks at examples of different West German pottery companies producing very similar forms or decors (you can see the others by clicking herehere, here and here)

Happy New Year 2016

Happy New Year to all our readers.

Potsandpots has fallen victim to the usual wave of optimism that abounds in early January making resolutions 12 months ago that just don’t come to fruition. Plans to undertake a blog per week and update the website with hundreds more photos and add new factories just hasn’t happened! We managed 15 not 52 blogs, updated company galleries alphabetically only getting to Fohr and didn’t add a new factories.

On a more positive note thanks to all our readers we exceeded 0.5 million view – big thank you to everyone who takes the time to read our website. We also celebrated Easter and the Tour de France with the help of fat lava!

With renewed optimism PotsandPots will again endeavour to undertake a blog per week and update the website with hundreds more photos and add new factories. There are also a number of corrections that need to be introduced as new information is unearthed.

One half of PotsandPots – Littlowlski – has reserected her blog after a haitus of nearly 2 years, click here to reader her retro/vintage blog which usually comes with a healthy dose of West German pottery!

West German Pottery Spotted (44) – Get Over It, Film

Potsandpots has Little Owl Ski to thank for spotting these West German vases in the ‘Get Over It’ film. The film released in 2001 is a teen comedy loosely based on William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The filming was located in Canada and features some great retro houses and – the reason for it appearing here – some West German pottery.
