West German Pottery – Price Trends – Dec 2011

For the fourth month the sale prices on ebay have been investigated to look at West German Pottery price trends.  The aim is to monitor the changing value of West German pottery through analysis of UK eBay sales. The intention is that this will provide a barometer for the popularity/desirability of Fat lava items

December 2011 sales indicate a slight dip in average sale prices compared to the previous month. The average sales price was £17.65 (compared to Novembers £21.91). The top 20% most expensive items average sale price was up to its highest level since monitoring started in September 2011 (compared to Novembers £78.51).

The 20% most expensive items value was undoubtedly strongly influenced by a £450 sale of a Carstens vase. This was for a 30cm tall Carstens vase with a blue version of the decor shown on the items below.

A longer data series will be required to determine if this increase in sale price is a result of random month to month variation or part of a longer term trend.

WGP Spotted (10) – “Dickinson’s Real Deal” TV Show

West German pottery featured on ITVs Dickinson’s Real Deal on Thursday 6th October 2011. On this show members of the public bring in items they want to sell. They are offered money from ‘expert dealers’ and they can choose whether to accept the expert dealers offer or take a chance and gamble by taking the items to auction.

On this episode Carla brings in three West German pottery items from her seventy strong collection. The “independent valuation” on the show suggests a value of £80-100. The dealer offers £100 for the three vases which Carla (I think wisely) accepts.

WGP Spotted (9) – “Harmonious Home” Book

The book “” by Judith Wilson published only 6 years ago (2004) still features some West German pottery some 14 years after West Germany ceased to exist.

Under “Storage and Space Savers” two Dumler and Breiden pots feature. It seems appropriate that they come within the storage section as West German vases are taking over every spare surface within our house! The two D & B vases are shown in close up on the bottom shelf of the 3rd photo.

This entry comes courtesy of “The Knack” DIY magazine. In volume 4 part 45 (it is not dated, though I think it is from 1980) there is the photo showing a Scheurich 407-35 nestled upon the shelf. The article goes on to explain how to make the shelves which the vase sits!
