Seeing Double – Roth and U-Keramik

There are numerous examples of different West German pottery companies producing very similar forms or decors. There are a number of different explanations for this phenomenon including:

  • Popularity – Successful shapes or glazes were copied by competitors keen to maximise their profits
  • Designers – The people that designed the forms or glazes moved between different companies through their career, some worked for multiple companies at the same time. Several factories were also founded by employees of existing factories.
  • Product sharing – Some companies used forms produced by another company and applied their own décor
  • Company buy outs – As some companies went out of business or were purchased by other companies their moulds were transferred between companies
  • Chance – With the huge range of items that  companies produced some similarities between different manufacturers would inevitably occur by chance

This will be the first of a number of blogs where examples of copycat vases will be showcased.

The first example is the striking similarity between the décor on a Roth vase (4301) and a smaller U-Keramik vase (1735/14). The two green and white glazes are very alike and have been applied to the form in a similar position. The cause of this similarity is not known. Both these vases are currently for sale on eBay (you can see them by clicking here).

West German Pottery – Price Trends – August 2012

This update concludes a years worth of price trend analysis. Sale prices on eBay have been analysed to evaluate West German Pottery price trends. The aim is to monitor the changing value of Fat Lava pottery through analysis of UK eBay sales. The intention is that this will provide a barometer for the popularity/desirability of Fat Lava items.
The average sale price of West German pottery items during August 2012 was £11.45, up slightly from the previous month (£11.13). The top 20% most expensive Fat Lava items average sale price was £51.96, again up on the previous month (£36.95).

Analysis of trends in price changes during the previous 12 months indicates that the average price has dropped slightly. The cost of the most expensive 20% of vases reduced during the first 6 months but it has started to increase again during the latter half of the analysis.
West German Pottery Sale Prices Aug 2012 - Cost & Value changes over 12 month trends
This data is based on a sample of 1,200 Fat Lava sales on eBay over the last 12 months. It should however be noted that there are a number of uncontrollable variables which will influence the recorded sale prices including the quality of vases offered for sale through eBay, the quantity of vases listed and changes in postage costs.

Carstens Luxus Range

The Luxus Range, translating to mean luxury or deluxe, contains some of the highest quality Carstens items. The Luxus range was marked with a paper or material square containing a spiral and from this, hung by a thread, was a large paper/card label (see image below).
Carstens Fat Lava Mark Sticker

The giant floor vase shown below forms part of the Carstens Luxus range. It has the remnants of the square paper label which allows a positive attribution to the Luxus range. The base is marked “C 186-44”, it is not clear why, but a small number of Carstens form numbers are preceded by a letter (for examples see here). The vase stands an imposing 44cm in height. The glaze has extraordinary depth with different colours surfacing and then disappearing beneath another. The vase is currently for sale on eBay – you can see it here.

1950s Mid Century Plant Stand With West German Plant Pots

The chance to put some of our 1950s West German plant pots in familiar surroundings was too good an opportunity to miss.

The plant stand itself has a main lower table with three angled feet and a further 3 levels supported from a central stem. The table surfaces are Formica with metal and plastic rims. It is currently for sale on eBay here.

West German plant pots can be fiendishly difficult to identify, I have started to catalogue all the plant pots we have along with details of those that can be positively identified (see here). The only ceramic item in the picture that I have certainty over the manufacture is the second item from the top which was produced by Dumler & Breiden.

Wh‘otto’ Vase

Otto Keramik produced some seriously great fat lava items. Two of the leading proponents of West German pottery, Otto Gerharz and Kurt Tschorner combined to produce what are now some of the most sought after fat lava items. Kurt Tschorner produced the forms and Otto Gerharz developed the stunning glazes. Items were not produced in the vast quantities of some other West German companies; Otto remained small probably employing not more than 20 people.

The stunning example below shows the results of the successful amalgamation of form and glaze – it is currently for sale on eBay, you cans see it by clicking here.
