Part of the PotsandPots ever changing collection of West German pottery has been featured on Potted.
The Potted website specialises in new outdoor pottery and furniture. The PotsandPots pick of the bunch is probably this retro styled garden egg chair.
This new TV series sees TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp “using vintage style to transform unloved houses into beautiful homes”.
The first episode features a 1960s maisonette in Edinburgh. As part of Kirstie’s transformation the couple purchase a yellow West German vase for £25 – shown below. My personal choice of the three would have been the large red Scheurich vase.
The yellow West German vase is given pride of place in the finished room – along with a number of other Fat Lava vases (including two Scheurich vases).
Shown below is a close up of the small Jopeko vase from the third picture which PotsandPots recently sold on eBay. You can see the whole show here.
Sale prices on eBay have been analysed to evaluate West German Pottery price trends. The aim is to monitor the changing value of Fat Lava pottery through analysis of UK eBay sales. The intention is that this will provide a barometer for the popularity/desirability of Fat Lava items.
The average sale price of West German pottery items during September 2012 was £16.87 , up from the previous month (£12.06). The top 20% most expensive Fat Lava items average sale price was £58.25 , up on the the previous month (£30.46). This month also included the 3rd most expensive West German vase within the samples taken for the last 14 months – a large Otto Keramik vase selling for over £220.

The TV programme Antiques Roadshow featured a big segment on West German Fat Lava ceramics this week (broadcast on 28/10/12). A collector had brought in about 40 vases from his collection of 1,000 to 1,500 items.
The episode (episode 4, from series 35) can be viewed here and there is a separate clip on just the Fat Lava items here.
The expert Will Farmer describes the vases as having a “love it or hate it” impact on people and goes on to say that this is still a young growing market with many factories and lots of information still to be discovered. The prices are said to be increasing and Will himself has now started to sell it in his sale rooms.
Intriguingly during the valuation discussion Will Farmer mentions that there are rumours that some Roth items are swapping hands for over £1,000.
