West German Pottery Spotted (24) – “Miranda” TV Show

The TV show Miranda has previously featured on West German pottery Spotted, with West german vases spread thoughout the shop in which much of the show is filmed (you can see that blog here). Little Owl Ski however has also spotted a big Dumler & Breiden lamp in the restaurant which you can see below on the left hand side (Series 2, Episode 1 ‘The New Me’).

West German Pottery Spotted (23) – The Legend of Tim Tyler, TV Show

Thanks to Humphrey Gudgeon from Luxembourg who spotted this West German pottery on ‘The Legend of Tim Tyler: the boy who lost his laugh’, a German children’s TV series from 1979, and sent it in to Pots and pots.

Humphrey goes on to say that the series is fantastically dated in a 1970s way – definitely one for the retro- obsessed. In [the scene with West German pottery in] Tim wonders through a fairground, winning various prizes, one of which is obtained by throwing a ball into one of the West German vases.

Pots and Pots wholeheartedly agree that there are some great retro images in the show – its worth a look even if you don’t understand the German speech – you can see the show here.

Seeing Double (2) – Ruscha 313 and Jopeko 404

The Jopeko 404/12 bears more than a passing resemblance to the celebrated Ruscha 313 designed by Kurt Tschörner (released in 1954). The Jopeko 404 vases pictured (12 cm high) are smaller than the Ruscha 313 (15cm high). Jopeko also made a larger 17cm high version of the 404.

As far as I am aware Kurt Tschörner did not work for Jopeko and the two factories were located about 80km apart (Jopeko – Ransbach Baumbach, Ruscha – Rheinbach).

There is not doubt that this form was first produced by Ruscha. It is therefore probable that due to the popularity of the Ruscha 313 Jopeko decided to copy the form to maximise their profits. Even the form number used by Jopeko has a certain symmetry to that used by Ruscha.

This post forms part of a series of blogs, Seeing Double, which looks at examples of different West German pottery companies producing very similar forms or decors (you can see the others by clicking here).

West German Pottery – Price Trends – November 2012

Sale prices on eBay have been analysed to evaluate West German Pottery price trends. The aim is to monitor the changing value of Fat Lava pottery through analysis of UK eBay sales. The intention is that this will provide a barometer for the popularity/desirability of Fat Lava items.

Thanks to feedback received from John Sydney (@backoftheocean) on this analysis, the costs of West German pottery sales has now been updated to include the sale price plus postage costs – rather than just sale price as was previously the case. This gives a truer reflection of the actual value of the items. Historical prices (pre November 2012) have been uplifted to include postage cost (uplift calculated based on the average November 2012 postage cost £5.85).

The average sale price of West German pottery items during November 2012 was £22.57, almost unchanged from the previous month (£22.72). The top 20% most expensive Fat Lava items average sale price was £50.75, down on the previous month (£64.10).
